TEACHING

Discernment

Knowing Which Voice to Follow

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

John 10:27 (NKJV)

About this MESSAGE

This teaching examines why sincere obedience is not enough if we have not learned to discern the voice we are following. Biblical discernment enables us to distinguish God’s leading from emotion, pressure, human influence, and spiritual counterfeits. As our spiritual senses mature through Scripture, testing, obedience, and relationship with the Holy Spirit, we become better equipped to follow the Shepherd with clarity rather than confusion.

KEY SCRIPTURE

“But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)

KEY TEACHING POINTS

1

Discernment Must Precede Obedience

Sincerity alone does not guarantee that we are following God’s direction. We can move quickly, serve faithfully, and still respond to the wrong influence. Mature obedience begins by learning to recognize the Shepherd’s voice before we act.

2

Not Every Spiritual Voice Is God

Emotion, logic, spiritual activity, and even well-meaning people can influence our decisions. Biblical discernment does not reject feelings or counsel; it tests what we hear against Scripture, the character of Christ, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

3

Discernment Must Be Trained

Discernment is not developed through desire alone. Hebrews teaches that mature believers have their spiritual senses exercised “by reason of use.” We grow by pausing, testing what we hear, obeying what God has made clear, and remaining close to the Shepherd.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

A PRAYER FOR YOU

Father, teach me to recognize Your voice with greater clarity. Deliver me from responding to pressure, fear, emotion, or spiritual-sounding influences without first testing what I hear. Holy Spirit, train my spiritual senses as I remain grounded in Your Word and walk closely with You. Give me the maturity to pause before I move, the wisdom to test what I hear, and the courage to obey what You make clear. May my decisions be governed by Your leading rather than human expectation, and make me increasingly familiar with the voice of my Shepherd. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
